Culture Reject is the voice and songs of Canadian lo-fi pop artist, Michael O’Connell. Since his debut 10
years ago, he has been quietly building a loyal legion of fans throughout Canada, the US and Western
Europe.
The spring of 2019 brings his latest offering Breaking with the World ( Specific Recordings, FR), a carefully
crafted collection of understated pop anthems. With evocative lyrics, we hold each other’s burdens, we
survive without sermons (If I Can’t Turn You On) // in a bootcamp for loving myself, so that I can love
someone else (Bail), Breaking reflects O’Connell’s move away from Toronto to the wide open spaces,
hours north of the city. Much of the record was recorded at his new home in Grey County (between
evening swims) while mixing was collaborated on with the sonic balancing of Justin Nace ( Alvvays, Andy
Shauf).
Culture Reject will be playing select dates in France, Germany and Ireland this April 2019.
