Teuflisch gute Klänge aus Brasilien: Das Satanique Samba Trio kommt im März nach Düsseldorf ins KIT.
Wer beim Namen Satanique Samba Trio an drei Musiker denkt, bekommt gleich noch zwei dazugeschenkt. Das Quintett aus Brasília schafft mit Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug, Bassklarinette und Cavaco eine infernalische Version brasilianischer Musik.
Die 2003 gegründete Gruppe widmet sich der Dekonstruktion der gängigen Klischees traditioneller brasilianischer Stile: Samba, Forró, Bossa Nova und Lambada werden angedeutet, umgedeutet, übersteigert und verfremdet.
Satanisch ist dabei vor allem der Look der in schwarze Kutten gehüllten Musiker, die mit ihrem weniger satanischen, dafür aber humorvollen und originellen Sound einen neuen Stil in die brasilianische Musiklandschaft einführen möchten.
Sounds and Colours schreibt über ihr neuestes Album Só Bad: „Mehr Avant-Pagode-Wahnsinn von Brasilias Lieblingssöhnen. Ich liebe den respektlosen Humor dieser Band und die Art und Weise, wie sie sich ständig selbst auf die Schippe nehmen und dabei einige wirklich originelle Interpretationen traditioneller brasilianischer Genres wie Samba und Samba-Jazz hervorbringen. Sie beschreiben ihre Musik zwar als brasilianische Low-Fidelity-Musik, aber hier ist viel mehr im Spiel. (…) Alles ist zwischen einer Minute und eineinhalb Minuten lang. und innerhalb dieser Grenzen spielen sie Samba, als ob sie von einer akustischen Magic Band gespielt würden (*).
Im weiteren Verlauf des Albums scheinen die Stücke noch verrückter und dekonstruierter zu werden und, wie bei der Magic Band,weiß man, dass sie ihre Instrumente wirklich gut spielen können, aber sie entscheiden sich einfach dafür so zu klingen.“

Satanique Samba Trio is an instrumental avant-garde quintet (yep, not really a trio), founded in 2003 with the sole purpose of posing as an idiosyncratic force on the Brazilian musical landscape. No Brazilian traditional rhythm remains unscathed on Satanique Samba Trio’s trail of desecration. From samba to forró, from bossa nova to lambada, this Brasília-based quintet (sometimes sextet) has been adding virulence, dissonance and provocation to Brazil’s musical heritage. Their efforts on deconstructing Brazilian music’s most persistent clichés have resulted in 13 albums so far: Misantropicalia (2004), Sangrou (2007), Bad Trip Simulator #2 (2010), Bad Trip Simulator #1 (2011), Bad Trip Simulator #3 (2013), Badtriptych (a 2014 digital compilation released by Far Out Recordings – UK), Mó Bad (2015), the double 7-inch vinyl Xenossamba (2017), the world’s first liquid album Instant Karma (2019), Mais Bad (2019), Forrível (2020) and Mini Bad (2021).
After 13 years of memorable shows all over Brazilian soil (some of them on the same bills as Tom Ze, Nana Vasconcelos and Hermeto Pascoal), Satanique Samba Trio went abroad for the first time in 2016. From Northern Europe to Greece the band introduced its own disassembled versions of Brazilian traditional rhythms to thousands of unexpecting ears. In 2017 and 2019 the Brazilian enfants terribles went back for two more tours (this time with the support of a substantial fanbase), marking their presence in festivals like Music Meeting (Netherlands), Leffingeleuren (Belgium) and Moers (Germany). They have played in well-known venues like Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Recyclart (Brussels) or Alice (Copenhagen). Two of their concerts have been recorded by major broadcasters VPRO (Netherlands) and WDR (Germany). Now, in 2023, after a covid-hiatus, they are finally hitting Europe again – this time to promote their new 6-track 7-inch vinyl Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 2 (Rebel Up! Records).
Satanique Samba Trio has also made its way into a great number of musical compilations all over the world, such as A Nova Música do Brasil/ New Music From Brazil (The Guardian newspaper – UK), AM Soundz (Aktion Mutante – Austria), Braz-ILL (Gonzo Circus / Red Bull Music Academy – Belgium) and, of course, as expected from such an unusual instrumental act , a couple of movies (A Curtição do Avacalho by Petter Baiestorf, Fixation Element by Murilo Seabra, É Nóis by Alex Vidigal, etc).
